In 1997 Matthew received training in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction at the Michigan Dyslexia Institute (MDI), located in Lansing, Michigan. After completing his training, Matthew taught for three years at MDI until he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he established a private practice. Early in 2001, he began working for the San Francisco/Burlingame Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center. Currently, Matthew is an Associate Member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE).

Outside of teaching, Matthew is a professional jazz drummer, who plays regularly with a number of Bay Area musicians--Andrew Speight, Larry Vuchevich, and the Big Beat Trio, to name a few. Also, he is a graduate student in speech-language pathology at CSU, Hayward in Hayward, California.
